Message from the President
Dear Fellow Grandmaster, Masters, Instructors, and Practitioners of Taekwondo;
On behalf of the CUTA I am delighted to extend a warm welcome to everyone attending the 2009 California State Taekwondo Championships, Northern & Southern Regions, the Official Tournaments of California Unified Taekwondo Association.
It takes considerable determination and discipline to participate and excel in Taekwondo. These championships are particularly exciting for the participants who have an opportunity to test their skills, knowledge, technique and further develop their unique skills and abilities. They also provide the opportunity for black belts ages 14-32 years old to join the 2010 CUTA Teams and compete at the International Taekwondo Festival in California, and the World Taekwondo Expo in Korea. In addition, we will provide the opportunity for Red & Black belts, ages 12-13, to join the training with the CUTA Team as members of the Jr. Development Team. It is both challenging and rewarding to be in these prestigious events, and they will definitely be action packed competitions.
I hope all the competitors have a fantastic competition experience, as well as a fun and enjoyable time during their stay in the world renowned UC Berkeley and beautiful sunny Southern California. I give you my personal guarantee that these tournaments will be a memorable experience, and I firmly believe these State Championships will be a truly world-class tournament built on a foundation of integrity and professionalism.
Please accept my best wishes for a successful competition.
Sincerely,
Grandmaster Pyoung Koo
President CUTA

Greeting from the Honorary Chairman
As Founding President of the USA Taekwondo NGB in 1974 and Founding President of the California State Taekwondo Association in 1979, I would like to invite you to participate in the 2009 California State Taekwondo Championship. The Northern Region championship will be held in the RSF Field House, University of California, Berkeley on August 8th, 2009 and the Southern Region championship will be held in California State University, Dominguez Hills on December 5th, 2009.
The sport/art of taekwondo enjoys a global membership in the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) of 189 countries. The WTF has just successfully held the 1st World Para-Taekwondo Championship in Baku, Azerbaijan as a prelude to becoming a Para-Olympic Sport. Taekwondo will also be included in the Olympic Youth Games next year in Singapore. Next month's 25th Summer Universidad in Belgrade, Serbia will include Poomsae for the first time along with Kyoroogi.
Taekwondoists, as followers of this popular Olympic sport, we must remind ourselves that in the Olympic Games, as in the philosophy of taekwondo, the main objective is not to win but to take part; just as the most important thing in life is not the triumph but the maximum effort. You will be winners in life if you incorporate the philosophy of taekwondo and Olympism which can be earned through a positive learning attitude and experience.
The California State Championship is a stepping stone for national and international sports events. That is why your participation is encouraged. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate President Koo and all of his officials who uphold the spirit of taekwondo as a grassroots development in this great state of California.
Thanks in advance for your participation.
Sincerely,
Dr. Ken Min

Greeting from the Honorary Chairman
It is with great pleasure that I accept the California Unified Taekwondo Association's invitation for my position as Honorary Chairman for the 2009 California State Championships.
As one of the past presidents of the California State Taekwondo Association, and having been involved in many international events including several Olympic Games, I have great pride and compassion for Taekwondo.
I remember the 1970s when Taekwondo was virtually an unknown sport; people even had difficulty pronouncing it. Since then, Taekwondo has developed tremendously. Many competitive activities at the local, state, national, and even international levels contributed towards this recognition.
It is my ardent desire to see Taekwondo continue to develop as a sport while maintaining its traditional and venerable values. It is critically important that Taekwondo training be well-rounded and balanced to benefit practitioners of all ages and gender.
Taekwondo championships of this caliber should be offered as a testing ground for all participants of their mental, physical, and technical skills and achievements.
In closing, I would like to congratulate all competitors for their winning attitudes, regardless of medal standings, because they have enriched their knowledge through participation in this championship. I also commend President Pyoung Koo, officers of the CUTA, referees and volunteers for the outstanding organization.
Good luck and best wishes to all of you.
Sincerely,
Grandmaster Chan Yong Kim
